We had the best day on Saturday as we hit Rocky to celebrate the St Patrick Race Day and the start of the Rocky Race Carnival. Over a "Girls" dinner some weeks ago we decided, in our wisdom, that we should book a table at the upcoming race day, frock up, get the little ones looked after and have a day of fun and frivolity - or as Tash says "drinks and dribble". It was the best day and let me tell you the scorching heat did not hinder us at all! We managed to beat the heat thanks to the every handy fan ( classy plastic plate) and the never ending supply of cold bevvies (mmmmmmmm don't think we will be touching Cockatoo Ridge champers for a day or two). It was Class through and through, not only did the girls look great but the boys scrubbed up extremely well tooo. (One boy may have scrubbed up a bit too well thanks to a hat that he admired on a lady at the next table that he thought "went very well with his shirt!" - Yes Nana, Nickers has a penchant for hats it seems). We may not have won "fashion on the field" but my shoes were HOT!

Thank you Tash for arranging such a great day, also, a huge thank you to you and your beautiful family for having a stay at the "Resort on Rodboro" it was such a fun weekend, even with two tenacious yet gorgeous little girls couldn't dampen our spirits:) Looking forward to next year.

Birthday Boy No 2 - Marv

The parties just kept coming, much to Sophie's delight as she is forever the party girl. We celebrated Marty's 20th Birthday at the Port Adelaide Football Club and it was a great night. I guess after all of the eating, drinking, singing and numerous cakes over the 24 hours of Callan's celebration it was nice just to relax with family and enjoy each others company knowing we only had to consume 1 cake:)

Sophie was the candle official and she undertook the job with great maturity, but I think the best part for her was the chocolate chips that fell of as each piece of cake was cut - those she quickly devoured.

I just love these occasions when we can capture photo's with Grandad, Papa and Nana - Priceless to us all xx

One fine day we set out to catch a feed How lucky are we to live in this country

And we watched the waves and even saw some dolphins (mummy didn't have the camera ready)

Then it happened! I caught a fish on the lucky pink rod - catching it is ok but who is going to get it off the hook?

Then of course Daddy and Nana wanted to see if THEY could be as lucky as me!

Then I decided it was time to help pop out with the crabbin

The day after Callan's party Nick, Sophie and I joined nana and pop for a day on the sea - Sophie's first fishing adventure. On the outset I was a little concerned about how long she would enjoy the jaunt, if she would have sea legs or if she would be sick? Needn't have worried at all she took to fishing like an Old Salt and caught the first fish to book - a whiting (nanny would be happy with that). We had a great day, the weather was sensational, the fish and crabs were biting and the company was tops.

Ps as I am uploading these photo's Sophie is beside me narrating her memories of the day - hasn't fogotten a single detail - priceless

Callan's 21st - stage five - The Party

As I mentioned earlier it was a HUGE 24 hours and we finished off in style with a Cocktail / Poker Party. It wasn't a huge party but all those who attended are very special people in Callan's life and there wasn't a person who didn't have a tipple or two from the Martini Bar or a bet or two on the poker game, but thankfully some of us were smart enough to know when to call it quits and not go for the all in Guitar Hero sing/play off! (mmmm my husband was not one of those smarter people!)

I know, I hear you say "how many cakes can you have in one day:)" but this was the "official" cake.

Callan made the most amazing speech and my only disappointment is that I/we didn't even think to record or video it - we were far tooooo busy enjoying the moment(s).

To his credit, Glen's speech was positive and supportive of the fine young man Callan is.

To my credit, I didn't let any mum's/sister/auntie or ganny down and blabbed my way through a speech about how honoured I felt to be apart of Callan's life and to be his mum.

Then Grandad offered his praise of his wonderful grandson.

It's BIG, It's Expensive, it is........................

Callan has never been a boy of many wants, needs or gotta haves - but for some time know he has had his heart set on Guitar Hero (yeah I know - what the hell is Guitar Hero - showing our age really:) We tried to get this for Christmas but was sold out Australia wide - but Marty and Clare were the epitome of "shoppers" and found the last one in Adelaide, well Woodside actually, so we were able to surprise Callan with his very own "want/need/gotta have". It was actually a hoot at his party - but more of that later:)

Callan's 21st - Stage Two - Lunch

The majority of the Govett/Guy Clan met for lunch at the Watermark Hotel in Glenelg. Both families have remained great friends and have enjoyed many miles stones throughout the kids lives. It was lovely to see the extension of these family's coming out for the occasion including Glen's new wife and her children/grandchild, Nana and Pop Brotherton, Josh and his mates and Scotty and Dylan (Sophie's boys). But for me most importantly were my "sissa's" and even though we barely had more than a moment to re-acquaint the majority of these great photographic memories are as a consequence of there presence.

Also, to see Nana Rae, Papa, Grandad and Anita sit back and watch their flock with such pride really made the day so very special - thank you all so very much for sharing this day with us.

Callan's 21st - Stage One - The Hyatt

Celebrating Callan's birthday was a marathon job and was such a great time. We started at the Hyatt on the 23rd January with the expectation that we would welcome in his 21st birth year on the stoke of midnight - so let the party begin.

Marty had arranged a few treats for Callan, all of us really, but first a delicious concoction of mousse, cake and sorbet's arrived - Served by the most handsome waiter I must say:)

Then there were cocktails all around, some weird, some wonderful and some Sensational - the good thing about being out with family was that we could "share" a sip or two of each others drinks without toooo much worry (I think!)

Then just after last drinks were called and the clock had stuck 12.00 the cabaret act announced to all that Callan was infact celebrating his 21st birthday and would we all join in and sing him "happy birthday" - well as most of you would know the drinker you are the drunker you sound but the better you think you sound - so we belted out a fine rendition of "hippy bursday to u":) Then we proceeded to the Casio for so much more fun and good fortune (well Marty really had the good fortune, we like true relatives sponged off him:) If you ever get the chance try Casio War - it is GREAT

As most of you know we travelled to Adelaide at the end of January to Celebrate Callan's 21st Birthday, also Marty's 20th - So it was a HUGE occasion. I just don't know where to start with my blogging as there are sooooooooooo many sensational and special photo's for me from this time. The most significant are the ones of all 4 siblings as they are rare and always a parents pride and joy. I think we have all had a go at something like these "feet" - maybe not as trendy as these - mine were made out of empty milo tins with rope threaded through them, but just as effective. I guess if Sophie can strut her stuff in my heels, these monster feel were never going to be a problem for her.

On the Move AGAIN!

I don't think that there is anyone who hasn't heard me lamenting about our move - well, you will be happy to know it is all over and DONE. Our new address is 19 Quandong St ( or 19 Condom St if you are a 4 1/2 year girl!) Blackwater QLD 4717. We haven't moved far enough to warrant a new phone number so I guess that is one good thing.

Nick has worked like a Trojan this last week trying to fit everything from a 2 storey house into a single storey house! A big ask but we have achieved it somewhat successfully. So all the boxes are unpacked, gradually finding our way around, the pets have all had a go at escaping so Nick has had to "dodgy" up fencing everywhere but we are happy that it is all over (for now).

Finally, Sophie's wish came true - a new puppy.

When we arrived in Rockhampton after our trip to Adelaide for Callan's 21st we hit the pet shops to find Sophie her new puppy (and Toby replacement). Rosie is as sweet in nature as she is in looks and is cute to boot. Bella welcomed her gracefully and they have since become great mates with Bella even allowing Rosie to eat from her bowl! Rosie was 11 weeks old when she joined our family but hasn't really grown much more, perhaps a little more attitude now than when she first arrived home:) But we are all in love with her.

Sophie proudly received a certificate today, after her 2 week accelerated lessons, she graduated from the Turtles swim group. She is now a Seal! After she graciously accepted her certificate she said "mum, what's a tificate? why did Miss Sally give it too me? can I have an ice cream now!" (all in the same breath mind you. The hilight of her week of swimming was the lolly pops that Miss Sally handed out to all participates today!

Well! after a slow start (Auntie) Linda Darling, Valerie and Lori appear to have hit their straps. Most days now we get 3 eggs and some of them have been beauties, including 2 double yokers so far. Nick thinks he has worked out who lays what eggs based on the differing colours of the eggs! The two larger eggs in the carton he believes belong to (Auntie) Linda Darling, who would have guessed she would turn out to be such a fine layer after her earlier attempts?

Sophie is our chief egg collector with this being her MOST important job each morning, she is sometimes up and ready to collect even before the poor girls have finished the job. But the girls get all excited when they see her coming as they know they can get out and roam the yard for the rest of the day.

Sophie is getting sooooooooooo good at diving, to the point that she looks for things at the bottom of the pool ie rubbish, leaves, ear rings and any other bits of crap that has been left behind - bit of a scavenger is our Sophie. Nick has spent a lot of time showing her how to push herself down to the bottom to collect her booty. She is now a pro and spends most of her time scavenging. Her new flippers make it even easier to get down and up in record time (note that the end she is diving is 1.8 metres deep - not bad for a 4 year old!)

She is Dynamite in the water - For Christmas Sophie received snorkel, goggles and flippers, the snorkel posed a slight problem when trying to talk underwater! but the flippers have been a hoot. She just loves the pace the give her and whilst this might be a surprise to some, she has NO difficulty walking in them - this is most likely due to her early exposure to stiletto's!

At the tender age of 4 Sophie is already on her way to freestyle swimming. Miss Sally uses a great technique called "bubble arm, breath arm", which quite simply is when you lift your first are it is face down and blow out bubbles, with the second arm turn your face to the side and take a breath! Simple you might say - yes, but then, Miss Sally also wants you to kick your legs! How is a girl to remember all of this? ]

Now, if Miss Sally had asked her for bubble arm, breath arm, lipgloss there wouldn't have been a problem:)

The Dive

Sophie and Nick have spent a lot of time working on her diving skills - changing it from a "belly flop" to a very refined DIVE. Some of her belly flops brought tears to our eyes, so it is with much relief that she is getting the hang of it.

Ahhhh the end

Sophie started a two week intensive swim group and she is loving it. Today (Thursday) saw both little girls (both 4) a little lacking in the concentration department, doing more sinking than swimming, but hell I am tired by the end of the week! Initially there were 4 kids in the group but 2 dropped out, which is just great for Sophie and Annabell as they get Miss Sally's undivided attention:)

After her lesson Nick and I join her in the big pool for a further half hour or so of water play. Although having said that Nick has been on afternoons since Tuesday so it has just been Sophie and I - it is such a refreshing way to Finnish the day.

On our way home we called in to see the progress on Tegan and Mick's beautiful new home. On our last visit the building was really only a shell, no gyprock, no electrical work, no painting, so it was amazing to see the transformation with all these things done. Unfortunately my camera hasn't done the beautiful feature wall justice and my battery went flat after only a few photo's but I think you get the picture of how stunning this home is going to be. The ensuite is still my favourite room and I can't wait to see it completed.

Your attention to detail is amazing and the wait to move in will be worth as you have built yourselves a beautiful nest.

Sophie has always loved having her chance to take a photo, but even more since I have had my little camera. Being that it is so compact and easy to use she will often grab the camera and starts snapping away. You can easily identify shots taken by her due to the angle of the photo, heads are often only half captured and she just LOVES the close ups! She has actually captured some lovely photo's on ocassions.

On the weekend we headed into Rocky to do a little shopping, catch up with friends and enjoy some fine dining. We tried the new Indian Restaurant in East St, when we first walked in Nick was a bit nervous, stating that "it is always a worry when you walk into an Indian Restaurant and there are no Indian's?" But no sooner had he made that statement when an Indian lady returned from the kitchen and we could see through the open door that several Indian men were cooking! So we decided to stay:) Had a great feed with Tegan and Mick, our eyes were bigger than our bellies as there was way too much food - But we did our best.

The spa was where Sophie met her "friends" each day. On our very first day at the Sailport resort Sophie was fortunate to meet these great kids whose parents manage the place, plus two more whose family own an apartment. They immediately took Sophie under their "wings" and made her holiday a memorable one. They would spend a couple of hours in the pool and spa, go home for dinner then come and collect Sophie for another 1/2 hour or so play time. Sophie would rush us home for her tea and shower, don the lip gloss and dress, then wait expectantly for her friends to come and get her. She still talks about her "friends" on the Sun Coast.

The Mooloolaba beach must be one of the most stunning beaches on gods earth. There were just enough waves to make it fun and body surfing a challenge. The water was crystal clear without rocks or weed. The temperature even had me in the water! Some mornings we were ready to swim at 6am as the days seemed to start so much earlier, eventhough we were on holidays. Nick, Sophie and I couldn't get enough of the beach - and can you see why?

A holiday to Sophie is whereever there is a pool! On this trip she swam at least twice daily, more if she could talk someone into taking her and it didn't matter if it was the pool, beach or spa, as long as there was water! She is like a little dolphin, spending most of her time under the water, this freaking Uncle Vic out somewhat and he was never far away "just in case". Auntie Sharon spent time helping Sophie practice her dives (or belly flops - call it as you see it:).

Anyone who knows Sophie is well aware of her shoe fetish, unlike her elder brothers toe fetish! From the minute she could walk she has loved wearing hers, yours, mine, any ones shoes really. The older she gets the more refine her tastes become, with a little help from mum:).

These latest shoes were spotted on the Sun Coast, but the store didn't have my size, but Nick was keen to buy them for me (go figure!!!) So when we arrived home I got online and found a store that had them. They arrived yesterday, Sophie phoned me at work to let me know I had a "parcel" and could she open it for me - yep Christmas still has a hold on her.

Nick made her wait until I arrived home, no sooner walked in the door when the wrapping came off. Much to her delight she declared that "the shoooze fit both of us!" The are now "our" shoes.

Finally, the countdown had come to an end, the final cross was put on the calendar and it was time for Santa to visit all those children who had been working so hard at being good - none more so than Miss Sophie. It was with great excitment that she put together supper for Santa and his reindeers, dictating a letter explaining who got what, wrote her name and headed off to bed without complaint. With all the excitement and hype I think she was asleep before her little head hit the pillow, leaving Santa(s) plenty of time to get organised:)

The "Girls" - coming of age

Yes! it finally happened, Christmas Eve to be specific, our first egg was laid by Lori. It was sooooo exciting and the egg was HUGE, turned out to be a "double yoker", not bad for a girls first effort.

Then, even more excitement on Christmas morning, Linda Darling refused to come out of her house - Ole Farmer Nickers knew something was going on, being familiar an all with Broody Women (so he says), so we gave her a little more "private" time to finish her business! Well I don't know why we bothered, her efforts did little to compare to Lori's outstanding efforts the previous day. We are convinced Linda Darling is a 5* girl and prefers not to push out anything toooooo big! But she will want to lift her game if she wants to stay off the dinner table - Ole Farmer Nickers has put her on notice! Lift your game Linda Darling or...............................

Dearest and long time friend Jenny (Edwards) sent we girls a few surprises in the post, mine needs a frock to go with it (much to Nick's surprise!!!) but Sophie's was an immediate and wearable hit!

(Hey Jen, thank you sooooo much for the great birthday gift and for the surprise for Sophie - as you might guess from the photo's she just love the skirt. She performed beautifully (only her parents could use those words!) for us in it. Uncanny how you knew just what a precocious 4 year old girl might love, seeing as you have 2 beautiful boys! Lovely to see your sewing machine at it's best sewing a sequenced skirt:) Soooooooooo looking forward to seeing you guys in January.)

As you may be aware Miss Sophie had been participating in Jazz lessons since turning 4, but was also a ballerina in a previous life! Her dance concert was scheduled for early December, we had anticipated being home from our holiday in time for her to participate, but decided to stay an extra few days on the Sun Coast with Nana and Pop, consequently missing her concert .

Do you think this mattered? Not an iota. Tonight Nick and I were privy to our very own PRIVATE concert from Miss Fleurbay, Principal choreographer, Principal singer, Principal Dancer etc etc etc.

We were totally enchanted as she burped, hic cupped, had a snack, drink and fell over a time or two to her own rendition of something! Daddy captured the whole experience on video for those who lack for entertainment and might want a giggle or two.

Today another parcel in the post (I know, how lucky are we:). Sophie read the label, as all 4 years olds do, and surprise, surprise she saw the letter "S" so it the parcel MUST be for her - Sophie starts with "S"!

(Auntie) Linda darling had sent me a special photo collage but had also included a "special" something for Sophie darling! Sophie was all ready to rip into the parcel, but the "witchy mother" and the "cranky dad" said that she had to put it under the tree until Christmas day! I know and I hear you saying "what kind of parents are we:)" So before she put the gift under the tree she checked her "personal" calendar to see just how many more sleeps she has to wait until she can open said present, then reluctantly put the pressie under the tree.

Nick and I had decided to get Sophie a play gym for Christmas, save all the walks to the park in the heat! But unfortunately, when the delivery truck arrived Sophie was home, once she saw the bright yellow slide she knew this was something for her! We decided to tell her that this was an early Christmas gift from mummy and daddy, but that daddy had to build it before Christmas day. Toooooo much information - don't say "build" in front of Sophie as she has watched "Bob the Builder" many times, so she KNOWS what needs to happen! So welcome "Shift Supervisor Sophie", who differs from "Works Coordinator" (Bella), who differs from "Works Quality Assurance Officers" (Linda Darling, Valerie & Lori), who differs from "gopher, labourer & general dogs-body" (Nickers). Daddy was at work, so time was time to wrap his presents. Sophie felt sure that SHE could wrap daddy's presents "all by my self!" So I became the "sticky tape" girl. Mmmmmm not as easy as first thought! but she got there in the end, well the end of the first gift that is, after that she decided "you can do them mummy and I'll write on the cards!" Maybe next year after few more lessons in "mastering disobedient scissors" she will have the patience to do them all:)

Marty and Clare apologised in the birthday card as there was nothing in the parcel for Sophie, only bubble wrap. As you can see she was delighted with her "surprise" in the parcel, then proceeded to be a "special" parcel for mummy and daddy - bit like in Jack in the box for ages. It is amazing how such simple things can give so much pleasure - I was not sharing my "surprise" on this occasion!

I know, I know, there are sooooo many of us out there, but today was my day:)

Marty and Clare sent my birthday present days before my birthday, hoping that it would arrive in time - thanks to Australia Post it was delayed. After many phone calls from Mart to see if my parcel had arrived. Today I followed with the post office only to find it had been sitting in Blackwater Post Office for some time! NOT HAPPY JAN!

But Lordy, Lordy was it worth the wait - today, not only was I "World's Best Mum" but I was the "World's most Spoilt mum" and I LOVE it. For those who know me well, I profess to be a champagne lover, but I am a lover with a budget. Thanks to Marty and Clare I finally get to try the 5 star stuff and I am rather excited. I have decided to save it for Christmas day so will let you all know just how delicious it is/was post Christmas:)

Out of the mouths of babes, Sophie had a conversation on the phone with her brothers this morning, this is part of her conversation with Callan. I hope he has taken her advice, so wise for a 4 year old:)

"Why didn't Cashy want to live with you any more?"

"I really don't know sweetie"

"did she just want to go and live with her mum and dad?"

"Yeah, I guess so"

"Well you'll just have to get a new girlfriend!" (pause, process)

"You already have another girlfriend - I'm your girlfriend AND your sister"

"Or, you could just go shopping, you could go shopping and get a new girlfriend!"

The phone was on speaker so I could hear the dialogue, graciously Callan laughed and assured Sophie he would start shopping for a "new girlfriend" straight away.

And that is how easy it is, as any girl would know, you just go shopping:)

Goodbye little Toby girl

It was a very sad day, the day we lost our little Toby girl, especially so for her best friends Sophie and Bella. But in true 4 year old fashion, Sophie has handled Toby's death with an acceptance that Nick and I did not expect. She misses her little playmate very much as does Bella but she often reassures us that Toby, her little jack russell, will always be in her heart!

"Hi Grandad, I'm good, do you know what Grandad? I don't have any more chocolates, can you please buy me some more?" pause, I gather that she is listening to Grandad

"mummeeee it's Grandad, you can talk to him"

All I can hear when I pick up the phone is dad laughing, coughing, laughing as he tries to come to terms with the random phone conversation he has just had with Sophie.

I say "don't even think about buying her a cat, as if we need a bloody cat!"

In the back ground I hear "Mummeee why did you say to Grandad "as if we need a bloody cat"?" Do they ever miss a thing????

Anyway, Dad asked me to arrange a box of chocolates for Sophie as he is "Grandad with the chocolates". When the parcel arrives Sophie is sooooo excited and knows the parcel is for her as she can see the letter "S" (forget that my name also starts with "S") As she is opening it I tell her it is from Grandad and "I wonder what it is?", with absolute conviction she replies " I think it is a cat!"

Thank the lord there was no cat! and thankfully she was just as happy with the chocolates.

Sophie chose beading as her "pre-bedtime" activity and was busily "creating" when Nick called to say good night (which he does every night that he is working). So as she chatted away telling him all about her day, my day, the dogs day she continued "creating" not missing a beat!

After a day indoors due to a stinker of a hot day we ventured out to enjoy some playtime before dark. I was busily sorting washing under the house, Sophie was playing with the dogs, there were lots of giggles, barking and bossing about (by Sophie). I ventured out to see what was going on to find ALL OF THE GIRLS looking particularly stunning! Head bands all round:) It was hysterical and funnily enough the dogs weren't the least bit phased as Sophie chopped and changed their headbands until she was happy with each dogs "look". Poor old Toby was having a few breathing problems as her headband really was a hair tie and a tad tight!

Sophie is incredibly excited about our up coming trip to the "Sun Coast" formally known as the Sunshine Coast. Each night for the past week it has become our night time routine to talk about who we will see, what we will do and how many more sleeps until we leave. There are lots of things for her to be excited about but the hilight at the moment is a "date" with nana and pop for ice cream with chocolate topping (the topping that goes hard).

This just cracked Nick and I up, we were so impressed with her creative approach to making a "plastic egg". We convinced her to let us boil the egg, just so it wouldn't break - Wallah you have a "plastic egg" used to encourage chookens to lay - Patent the idea do you think?????

Our Chookens are not far off laying (we hope) and they have lost their "fluffiness" but Sophie still adores them. Lately she has taken to asking Nick to put the dogs in their pen so that her "girls" can have the run of the back yard! They really are the most resilient pets as she cuddles them and takes them for walks! She gets a bit upset when the won't "come to her". So when her mate Ela-Blu came for a play it was an idea time to round the girls up for a bit of "show and tell"

Every kids has to take a tadpole or two home in their childhood and wait with baited breath for it to turn into a Frog (who may or may not be prince charming:)

Sophie had the joy of spotting a trillion tadpoles in the pond that she had previously been hop, skipping and running around. The absolute delight she found in watching, poking and trying to catch these poor little mites was beautiful to watch - isn't funny how so many simple things in life we take for granted, yet for a child are just an amazing wonder of their world.

"Can we take some home? I won't let Bella or Toby eat them, I'll keep them in my room........" There in lies the reason why we didn't take any tadpoles home! Given a chance she would have them in her room/bed with her! We have our limits you know!

PS I remember getting of the bus a stop or two before home to go "tadpoling" with a friend - did't tell mum ofcourse and got into a whole lot of trouble as she was as worried as, but kids have gotta experience tadpoles:)

Sophie just loves to go on a "date" with us, especially if it is to the Japanese Garden. Last Sunday before our eyes were even open she had decided that it was "date" day, she had gotten dressed, cleaned her teeth, put on a bit of blush, a bit of body spray and the mandatory lip gloss and she was ready! She just loves to frock up for the dates!

We headed off before the heat really set in and she had such fun running around the edge of the pond, shouting "look at me daddy/mummy" as we held our breath just waiting for her to fall in! Fortunately she is very well coordinated - I think sh gets that from her mother! (not)

So we watched as she skipped, hopped, jumped and over balanced her way around the pond a number of times - such joy the little things can bring.

"Keira was a bit mean to me, she said I was a show off?"

"I did some work and I saw daddy, we had lunch together and it was lovely"
"Ohhhh you saw your HANDSOME" she gives me the mushiest smile "daddy's your handsome isn't he mummy? you love him and that's why he is your handsome"

Finally! Sophie has mastered the one-eyed wink. Even though we have been telling her for years that she is winking (when she blinks both eyes) she now has the coordination happening and can give a real "wink" - A milestone we think as we still find it a challenge to get the wink happening -(particulary after a red or tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo:)

Melbourne Cup Filies

Nick, Sophie and I went to a friends place to watch the cup. Ela-Blu, a little girl that Sophie met at child care, and Sophie had such fun whilst the adults were watching the race. And in true Melbourne Cup spirit came out all "dolled" up for the occasion. They did their own makeup and entertained themselves (and us) with a few glamour shots that I feel sure, had they been at Flemmington, would have seem them competing for "fillies on the field".

November/December is a busy couple of months at Maria's - the girls have scheduled a few "functions" following Halloween! Maria provided Nick and I with dates for the "functions" that the girls have scheduled so that we know in advance what Sophie will need! Started with Broom sticks (Halloween) and continues on.

The girls prepare the week before, making table decorations, outfits, accessories and activities. This week was a very formal "princess morning tea". So as you can imagine, the minute madam opened her eyes it was "game on" selecting a "frock", shoes, jewels, make-up.......... the list goes on. Finally she was ready for daddy to take her to Maria's:)

As I am the local Administrator for Bluff, I (with my wifely ways) persuaded Nick to GO the "shave". I have never seen him without his moooooooostache and it is for a really good cause.

Then she realised that not only did Auntie Linda send her a "my pony" magazine but there was a bonus gift with in...................................................................................................................................(wait for it)........................... LIPSTICK! The magazine was pushed aside as she very quickly applied some "lippy".

Thank you for sending off the oil and manuka honey Linda, not that Sophie noticed that there was anything else in the parcel:) I'll need to talk to you about how I apply the honey and what the ratio is to make up the essential oil mix.

Our lovely daycare mum Maria scheduled a Halloween day for the girls - all 4! Brave lady I hear you say and we agree. She went to so much effort putting up spiders webs, skeletons and ghouls through out the room she has for the girls. So it was with great excitement and magic spells that Sophie headed off, broom stick and all, for her first Halloween tick'n'treating day.

A few weeks ago Sophie's big Sissa sent up a parcel of goodies, including some iron-on transfers, Sophie has been chomping at the bit to use these transfers. Finally I found a couple of plain T-shirts for her to use and boy did she use those stickers! She had such fun and really listened when I explained about how hot the iron is and to be VERY careful, you can see the absolute concentration on her little face. The end result "beautiful" and according to Sophie "these are the best t-shirts ever I had".

Sunday week ago Sophie and I went to the only shop that is open in Blackwater, the $2 shop, to get some blu tac to put her ABC letters up. As I was browsing Sophie introduced herself to a little girl who's mum was also having a lovely browse. Sophie promptly sharing all of the important information with her new friend "I had two dogs, Bella and Toby, Bella is a bull-mastif and Toby is only a little Jack Russell, I'm 4 and I have chookens too, my mummy is Sandie Michelle and daddy is Nickers, he sometimes bites me! we live at........................................." and on it went - I stopped her when she got to the bank account details:)

Sophie has always had the beautiful ability to make friends where ever she goes and this was no exception. Next I am being bombarded with "mummy can Annabell come to my house? I told her mummy where we live, can she? can she?" I looked apologetically at Annabell's mum as Sophie was really putting the pressure on (who I found out later is Bridget:) and she said "is she lonely for little friends too?" and there began a new friendship - Bridget and I swapped addresses and contact numbers, arranging for a play date, which took place today. It was a lovely afternoon, both Bridget and Annabell delightful people, the girls had such fun and naturally all of the "glam" gear came out.

With a schnuggle and cartoons on the couch. Some mornings, like this one, we are quite privileged not to have to get up and get going the minute our eyes have opened. Sophie loves her "cuddles" on the couch and Nick both love cartoons so it is a "win/win" for both of them.

I know this isn't the best parenting, but to help us ALL survive the 3+ hours at the hairdressers, I promised Sophie a new nail polish. The funky little salon that I go to in Emerald now consults and sells Napoleon Perdis products, smack bang in the middle of the table we were sitting at was a carousel of nail polishes. So being a quick thinking Gal that I am, I said to Sophie that if she was a patient and helpful girl I would by her a new nail polish - Well I am no wonder mum, but that suggestion worked WONDERS:).
She was hilarious trying to decide what colour to select, cuz daddy's favourite colour is blue, but the orange was pretty and the gold was sooooo sparkly, but SHE really loves pink and mummy loves the aubergine one! What is a girl to do - consequenlty she spent most part of the 3+ hours consulting with everyone in the salon on what colour she should select! Most people had a huge interest in why Nick's favourite colour should come into the equation? They buttoned their lips with a smirk after she told them that she will paint daddy's nails first.

Today I had no choice but to take Sophie to the hairdressers with me! When I made my appointment Nick was on a day off, so I had planned to leave madam home with him, but due to his recent change of roster, he was on an 0615 start so I had to take Sophie with me - and it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring! We did all sorts of things to make the 3+ hours fun but because it wasn't all "about her" it was boring:) She chatted non stop to all the customers, so much for them having a relaxing hour or so at the hairdressers! But we did have some fun, but at the end of the day she has decided that she doesn't want to be a hairdresser, she wants to be a fire fighter?

A Pixie in the Japanese Garden

Even though Blackwater is a very small town and often very dry and desolate - it does have a few redeeming features. Blackwater is sister city to Fujisawa (Japan), consequently we have a beautiful Japanese Garden attached to the new Coal Exhibition Centre. Sophie had the most wonderful time in the Garden frolicking from place to place, but as always the water held the most interest.

At the pool - again

The pool is almost a daily activity for us - probably paid off our own by now! Each day we go Sophie buddies up with the kids that are there, if she knows them or not. Everyone remembers her and one lady said to me today "she won't lack confidence when she is older!" and we hope that she doesn't.

Soph has been desperate for us to hire a floating mat as she has seen kids having heaps of fun on them. They are actually great toys as they don't seem to sink even when the kids stand on them and dive off. We didn't need to hire one, she just hopped on this one as it went past! As it turns out the little girl was at the pool with her grandparents, grandad was lovingly holding on to the mat whilst she had fun and generous enough to allow Sophie to climb aboard. The girls had great fun, frolicking for what felt like ages to us "cold" ones. Grandad even encouraged Sophie to turn around to me so that I could capture some photo's. Small communities are great when it comes to kids.

Sophie is one very lucky girl, she is never forgotten by her sister, brothers (and their lovely ladies), grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, godparents or friends, regularly receiving goodies in the mail for all sorts of occasions. She is sooooo used to the drill - "ok Sophie, wait while mummy/daddy gets the camera!" Now, when some thing new arrives or she wears something that has been sent she will say to us "well, are you going to take my photo?"

Thanks to you all who appreciate her passion for all things "girly" - lipgloss, lipgloss and a little lipgloss she ensures that the "gloss" is on before the photo is taken - But not only the gloss she is now telling us how and where she will have her photo taken. I hear you saying "prima donna?" Nick and I have another name for her but we wont' share it over the net!:)

Her latest obsession is curling gel that I picked up at the supermarket in an attempt to put some curl in MY hair. Well as you may have guessed it is now "our" product! And you will see that she even knows how to "fluff" the hair to get the best of the product.

PS hope you noticed the beautifully painted nails - her toe nails look just as beautiful - painted by oneself! Nick wonders how he will ever manage the teen years:)

Nick and I love having "dates" with Sophie, sometimes we all go, sometimes just Nick and like today it was a date with Mummy:) Now that I am back at work Sophie and I haven't had much time for dates, fortunately Nick has taken her swimming a number of times so it isn't as it she has been "dateless".
After the excitement of the parcel from Ashlee, we donned out lip gloss (as you do) and off we went for a cappuccino at the Coal Exhibition Centre. It is the newest and trendiest place in Blackwater, there is a lovely Alfresco area at the front and a huge auditorium/show room that tells you all you need to know about coal and coal mining in the Blackwater area. It also has a cinema - yes I know we are really hitting the big time here now. I mean once you have a cinema your really a city!
Sophie knew exactly what she wanted to order, chatting merrily away to the manager, telling her that "mummy loves cappuccino but she really loves grog the best!" Please note that whilst the establishment is licenced, I ordered coffee! The manager was so "child" friendly, next minute we are getting a grand tour of the complex and cinema - thanks to Sophie. When it was time to leave Sophie ran up to her new "Bestie" gave her a big hug and told her "see you tomorrow" - bet she can hardly wait!

Today there was great excitement when we arrived home from work/family day care, a parcel had arrived from Ash. Sophie spotted it on the table even before she was through the door - then the questions began -

"Who's parcel is that mummy? is it for me? can I hold it? mummy listen, it makes a noise, what's inside? can I open it? I can't open it mummy, can you help me?".......

Not only did the parcel contain my long awaited photo, but a selection of goodies for the "gremlin" as Ashlee loving refers to Soph and a birthday gift for Nick. So can you guess what was the most popular? The tic tacs were the most obvious, but no, the lip gloss wins every time:)

Photo's of Ashlee, Sophie and I are few and far between. For a number of reasons, namely the distance between Blackwater and Adelaide, but also it is either Ash or I taking the photo's. But this is a beautiful photo(s) of us on a night out in Blackwater before Ashlee headed back to Adelaide after her last stay. We had such fun with Sophie dancing the night away in her swanky red dress. The meal took forever to come, luckily they stocked a rather delicious red wine (Pepperjack Shiraz) so that compensated somewhat, didn't it Ronald.

After a few subtle hints, gentle reminders and out right nagging I finally received a CD today with a selection of photo's from Ashlee (Thank you darling) I knew she had some particularly nice ones from our time on the Gold Coast and I couldn't wait to get them and put them on my blog. How play dates have changed, but don't worry Barbie wasn't forgotten!

Sophie's mate Shayla was over for a play and the girls spent most of the afternoon playing various computer games from the ABC kids website. The absolute concentration as they navigated their way around the games was amazing. Two little bums perched on one chair, taking turns being in charge of the mouse and selecting the next game. But never fear Barbie wasn't far away, she was parked beside the computer doing her best to compete!

We stayed overnight in Rocky this week, we like to stay in cabins at the South Side Holiday Village. Normally we book a 2 bedroom ensuite cabin, but now we just ask for a one bedroom cabin with a cupboard! It's much cheaper:)

A trip to the mines on the QR Rail Car

I'm not sure if this blog will be of interest to many but last Thursday I went out in the QR Rail Car to various local mines sites as a part of a new group of Trainee Drivers inductions. The rail car historically was used to transport dignitaries and QR hierarchy, it would have been rather salubrious in it's day but is a little tired now. A fully equipped kitchen, tea and coffee, men & ladies toilets Lent for a comfortable outing. There are 2 full time drivers allocated to the rail car and they were great with many stories to tell of their history within QR. I was a bit spoilt and was given front seat beside Driver Noel.

It was interesting from the perspective that I could visualise all of the things Nick talks about,like the load out and track signage/lights - It surprised my just how fast the trains go and sitting right up at the front I felt a little inertia as it feels like you could "drop of the track" at any time. So I have a new appreciation for what Nick does - Having said that, after the first mine it was as exciting as watching socks dry!

The overburden from the mining looks like huge mountain ranges, my concern is that they have dug out so much of the earth that one day it will all cave in and we will end up China.

The newest wash plant looks like a mini city in the middle of no where and I was advised that this is state of the art, fully automated, costs millions and 12 months down the track they are still experiencing significant problems with it! Technology hey!

Swimming - In action

My apologies for the quality of some of these photo's, the new camera is fantastic but doesn't do so well beyond 10 metres. Parents are sectioned off at some distance, I guess so that little ones aren't distracted, hence the poor pictures.

Sophie is the youngest in her group by a couple of years I think but that didn't daunt her at all. She was cold and a tad blue when she came out but still very excited and keen to come back next week.

Is it my turn yet?

Finally the time has arrived for swimming lessons to start - for some unknown reason the Blackwater pool closes from May to October each year. They say these are the winter months, we probably had a month where it might have been a bit too cold to swim but six months? Clearly we missed winter along the way:)

The swimming cap is mandatory much to Sophie's delight, Nick picked it up for her a couple of days before her lessons so she has been "practicing" wearing her hat - Never seen a swimming cap worn so creatively!

Sophie has been so excited and counting down until it was her turn - her lessons are at 6.00pm Wednesdays, so it was a long wait and a big day as she has Jazz on the same day. Needless to say she slept like a babe after her lesson.

Her teach is Miss Sally and the feedback after the first lesson was "very confident and will progress well". There are 4 in the group and whilst one person is with Miss Sally the other 3 run amuck (a little) and Sophie was caught out a couple of times by not having her "listening" ears on (must have been hiding under her cap)! And you think this surprised us why? But it's Miss Sally's job to sort this out.

Sophie loves her puppy Toby but unfortunately this appears to be a one sided love affair. Toby is quite an independent and often arrogant puppy but of late she has shown Sophie a little more patience, perhaps it is to do with the beautiful songs Sophie has been singing to her? What do you think?

Sophie also had a great time at the Weir! Nick had been there before, but I had no idea what to expect, fortunately the mother in me packed spare clothes!

First it was ankle deep watching the dogs play, then it was thigh high trying to find out what Bella was looking for, then it was body deep in goooooo cuz it was FUN.

I am still trying to get the mud and slime out of her clothes! But she had so much fun and most beauticians are advertising "mud wraps" well Sophie had the mud without the wrap - she had soooooooooooooooooooooooo much mud her skin should be SENSATIONAL for a life time:)

A Dogs Day out

On Sunday we headed out the the weir for the afternoon and boy did the girls have a good day! Bella was hilarious as she tried to catch the water as it splashed up around her . There must have been yabbies or something in the water that got her attention and we were stunned to see her put her face under the water searching for whatever it was under the water! At times she looked like a kangaroo bouncing through all around. Poor old Toby did her best to keep up but in the end she gave up, had a roll in the sand and watched from a distance.

They were such fun to watch.

Fun at the park

We have a great park at the end of our street, Sophie considers this to be "our" park and I don't think she can be blamed for this as we go there at least 5-6 times a week. The dogs love it too as it is their chance to have a crazy time off their leads and boy do they make the most of it.

Sophie has FINALLY reached the milestone where she can get herself going on the swing, a talent she is most proud of. Nick has the role of the "grumpy old troll" and must follow her everywhere in the playground trying to stop her from crossing bridges, swings, slides etc (thanks to Dora the Explorer) - He's a pretty good "grumpy old troll" I must say:) He asks her to solve riddles before she can cross and often the "riddles" turn into "giggles".

Often when we are at the park we end up with a hoard of kids joining in on our crazy games, especially if we take the Frisbee with us!
